Jesus said to her, “Mary!”
She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (Teacher). John 20:16.
Blessed Easter season to you and families
Let’s go to the empty tomb once more. That Easter morning, Mary found the stone rolled away and saw an empty tomb. She was perplexed and still walking about the garden area and peeped into the tomb and saw two men (angels) sitting inside. She was having a conversation with them. They said, Woman why are you weeping? She replies, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” Mary then turns around and sees the gardener (or so she thought) who also says, Woman why are you weeping, whom are you seeking? She replies. Sir if you have taken him away, please tell me where, and I will carry the dead body. The Lord says one Word, “Mary”. It was the split second that changed her and humanity.
For a second, I want you to get into Mary’s mind: grieving, utter despair, clueless, lonely, weak, sorrow too deep for words, unthinkable loss, a broken heart, no interest in life, perhaps even doubts about God and the scriptures! And she was walking about, still looking for a dead body. Suddenly “MARY”. In a split second, she walks from death and despair into Life and Resurrection. A moment before she was in a fallen world, now she is in the New Creation, with a smile unstoppable and a laughter that cannot be contained. Everything forgotten, light and very happy, so happy in God and in Jesus her Saviour and Messiah.
Same thing happened to Peter, he came to the empty tomb perplexed, dejected, confused, and he kind of concluded that he rose from the dead. But on the way back Jesus met him (1 Cor 15:5). Every sorrow forgotten, brilliantly happy, forgiven, and relieved. The wolf pack now has their leader Jesus back! We are no longer headless chickens! Actually he is the Lion of Judah!
Early on that day, Jesus met the women as they went back (Mt 28:9,10). Imagine their happiness. Back home, whether the others believed or not, nobody could stop their joy.
In the evening, Cleopas and friend were walking to Emmaus. A stranger joined in the conversations, they constrained him to dine with them and suddenly at dinner time, they recognised Jesus. Again in a split second they move from one world to another. Even when he was veiled, their hearts were burning with hope and life. They ran back to Jerusalem carrying the good news!
That night, as the disciples were gathered together (still in fear) in Jerusalem, Jesus walks in and says Shalom! The master comforted their troubled and fearful hearts. He had a meal with them (broiled fish and honeycomb). Desserts are important too!
But now Christ is risen from the dead! (1 Cor 15:20)
Since that day, the world has never been the same. Entire human society has changed as a result of Christ rising again from the dead. We are forgiven, saved and part of a New Creation! A citizenship in Heaven! And part of God’s family! His Resurrection power is still being poured into our lives. You only have to read the gospels and dwell on these things. The Holy Spirit is still ministering Jesus’ life to us daily as we read the Bible!
Here are a few closing points by way of a reminder:
The apostles and the over 500 people who met the Risen Christ in Galilee, went about telling many others. It was these living witnesses who told others and spread the good news of Salvation and a New life in Christ! What are you waiting for?
Read the gospels, go to the Empty tomb, Meet Him afresh. And he’ll change your life one more time. And go tell others!
