The Millennial Kingdom

One nation under God – painting by Jon McNaughton (used with permission)

Under this section, broadly called Millennial Kingdom, we will cover the following topics.

  1. Rapture of the Church
  2. Return of Jesus to the earth and rule for a 1000 years popularly called the Millennial Kingdom of Christ. This is also called the Second Coming of Christ.
  3. Day of Judgement
  4. New Heavens and the new earth

(Picture above used as an illustration of the Millennial Kingdom)

Here we will only briefly touch upon these topics for brevity's sake, but I urge you to study these topics in detail, throughout the Bible. All these four truths are believed in by the Church, they are actual physical events occurring upon the earth. Throughout this blog, the words, Second coming, Jesus Return, Millennial Kingdom are used interchangeably. They denote the next chain of events, which once started cannot end but in the rule of Jesus Christ on earth.

(This section Millennial Kingdom is one of the four views of Christ one needs to have, to comprehend Lord Jesus and his mission fully. You can read more about what these Four views are in Why I write under About.

1.Rapture of the Church

The trumpet shall sound, the Lord himself will descend from Heaven with a shout, the dead in Christ will rise first, then we who are alive shall be caught up together with them to meet the Lord Jesus in the air. So shall we be forever with the Lord. 1 Thess 4: 13-18. The believers body will be transformed in an instant from a moral body to immortal (1 Cor 15) and then we will go up in the clouds and meet Lord Jesus Christ and go into Heaven with him.

Firstly this is a truth told to us in great detail by the Lord Jesus Christ while he was on the earth. Sitting on the Mount of Olives, Jesus describes his Return to Peter, John, Andrew and James (Mk 13:3). And explains his Second coming in Matthew 25 and Luke 17. In Matthew 25:1-13, he tells us the Parable of the 10 virgins, where the 5 virgins who were ready, went into the marriage supper while the other 5 are left behind.

Jesus is waiting for His bride, the Church to take her away to Heaven. And there will be a Marriage supper and a lot of happy time with Christ himself there. Also remember the lamb's wife is Perfect, without spot or blemish. It is a high standard that God has set for the bride of Jesus. We have to meet the Father's expectations.

"From Heaven he came and sought her, to be His holy bride,

And with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died."

Secondly, in Luke 17:26-37, Jesus explains to us the manner of His coming, that it will be like the days of Noah. Two men will be in the field, one will be taken up and the other left behind. Two women grinding at a mill, one is taken up, other left behind; two people are in a bed, one is taken up, the other left behind. He gives us three everyday scenarios, so that the reality of this event sinks into our minds.

  • Old Testament also bears witness to this truth: Enoch and Elijah believed in the rapture of the saints and hence were raptured. (Hebrews 11:5,6, Jude 1:14). It was a type of the New Testament Church which will be raptured at the Coming of Christ
  • At Easter, Jesus ascended to Heaven, the saints that rose with him also ascended
  • In Revelation, John speaks of the Coming of Christ on the clouds. (Rev 1:7). Also in Rev 3:10,11, 4:1,2
  • Paul wrote of this truth in 1 Cor 15 and 1 Thess 4.
  • In Revelation 11:12, the two witnesses, after being murdered in Jerusalem, come back to life and ascend into Heaven in plain view of the public.

In the Rapture the saying, O death where is your sting, O grave where is your victory (Hosea 13:14 quoted by Paul in 1 Cor 15:54) comes to pass. So I will just sum up the Bible saints who believed in this truth: Enoch, Elijah, Elisha, Jesus, saints who rose from the dead (in Mt 27), Mathew, Luke, John, Paul, the writer of Hebrews, Corinthian Church, Thessalonians, Churches in Revelation and Moses (Deut 33:2). It is not a human idea, but a construct of God.

C H Spurgeon

Beloved, we must preach the coming of the Lord, and preach it more than we have done, because it is the driving power of the Gospel. Too many have kept back these truths, and thus the bone has been taken out of the arm of the Gospel. Its point has been broken, its edge has been blunted. The doctrine of the judgement to come is the power by which men are to be aroused. “

C.H. Spurgeon (The Second coming of Christ. (pp 93, Whitaker House publications)

Of late, there has been an assault on this truth, that some altogether deny its occurring. It is a recent heresy. Also truths that are not preached in one generation, fade away from our minds and are lost altogether. Hence it is very important to preach these truths continually.

The Church universally believes in Rapture. The only minor point of difference amongst believers is if the Church will be raptured before the 7 year tribulation or Mid-tribulation. It is truly not worth debating these points. Unto each his own.

Christ shall come, and there will be a Rapture of the Church. These saints will live in Heaven for 7 years and then return back to the earth along with Jesus Christ, to rule and reign with him for a 1000 years.

While we are in Heaven, there are massive Judgements upon the earth during that 7 year period. It’s called the Tribulation (Rev chap 6-16). Because of these plagues and famines, almost half of humanity will die in those 7 years. My brother, my sister, it is time to accept the Gospel in its fullness and go away from this world. That is the portion of the Bride of Christ.

2.Second Coming: Jesus returns to the earth

After the 7 year Tribulation, Lord Jesus will come back to the earth with his saints. Jude spoke, “Behold the Lord comes with ten thousands of his saints.” Jude 1:14. Rev 19 gives us the landing and Rev 20 the reign of Jesus. Zech 14 tells us that His feet will land on the Mount of Olives and then Jesus the Messiah will proceed into Jerusalem to take over the city, nation and the world. It will be a reign of Pure Mercy, but instant Judgement for those who disobey.

Jesus will reign for a Thousand years upon the earth. Yes 1000 years. This is called the Millennial Kingdom of Christ. Mankind (and nature) will be very happy under him. All the prophets spoke of this - Isaiah (65,66), Jeremiah, Zechariah etc and many Psalms. Also a study of the good kings in Kings and Chronicles will give you a preview of the Millennial Kingdom. Also Every Apostle wrote of His return and reign. Even today Israel longs for The Messianic rule, though they rejected him as a Saviour and lamb.

Jesus will land from Heaven and take over the planet in an hour. In one hour, the Kingdoms of this world will become the Kingdoms of the LORD and of His Christ. All the saints of yore, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Samuel, David, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Zechariah, plus the New Testament Saints, and Pastors and Evangelists like Martin Luther, C.H.Spurgeon, Billy Graham, and DGS Dhinakaran will come back with him. Bach and Beethoven wrote much about the Millennial Rule of the Lord Jesus Christ. Their Piano sonatas, symphonies, concertos are full of it.

Jesus will live upon the earth, he will have a home in Jerusalem. You can meet him, He still will have wounds in his hands and feet. God himself will dwell upon the earth (Rev 20). At that time Satan will be bound for a thousand years. Oh! Beloved, don’t miss it. Every believer who walks with God will be Blessed thus, to share in his reign and rule on earth. We will have a variety of roles to choose from, and will fulfill all our desires and dreams. A true believer in Christ is not just living for this life only, but for the ages to come. May the Holy Spirit help as you read these truths and enter into this age.

“The Spirit and the Bride say, Come Lord Jesus.” Rev 22: 17,20

I have written a few blog posts under the topic Jesus Return. They cover few aspects of Rapture and Millennial Kingdom of Christ. On Blog page, you can sort on Topics.

3.Day of Judgement

In the Gospels, Jesus speaks of Judgement about 35x, of which ~25x he warns us of the Day of Judgement. He used various words like Judgement (Mt 12:41,42), the Last Day (John 6:39,40,44), End of the world (Matt 13:39,40,49) etc. Paul warns Romans (14:10) and Corinthians (2 Cor 5:10) that we must all stand before the Judgement seat of Christ and give an account of our actions. In the Old Testament, the prophets spoke of the Day of the Lord, which refers to both the Reign of Christ on earth and/or the Day of Judgement. All the prophets spoke of it - David, Asaph, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Joel, Paul, John, Jude, Peter etc.

Man as a rule, knows that there will be a Day of Judgement, even our consciences bear witness to this fact. All dispositions and faiths describe a great and dreadful day in which man will be judged before the Almighty God. The scene is described in great detail in Matthew 25:31-46, Revelation 20:11-15. At the voice of Jesus Christ, all the dead will come back to life (John 5:25-29). A great White Throne will be unveiled on which the Lord Jesus Christ will be seated. Every man great or small will have to stand before Jesus Christ and books will be opened and we will all be judged. (Dan 12:1-3,13). Also as Revelation (20: 10) tells us, Satan is captured and cast into hell eternally. This will happen in public view as Ezekiel 27, 28 tell us.

For the unbeliever, this is going to be a dreadful day. Bible clearly tells us that the wages of sin is death (Rom 6:23) and that all mankind has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23). Sinful man has no place in Heaven. People of different faiths, do good deeds and fasting and such routines to balance out the evil, and somehow gain Salvation. But the Bible clearly tells us that our good works are like filthy rags, they don't get gain us Salvation. Our sins are forgiven only because Jesus bore your punishment on the Cross. If you receive the work of Christ on the Cross, you are forgiven and accepted into the family of God. But, if you refuse Jesus, then you are on your own merit that day. and your own merit is like filthy rags.

For such a person who has refused God's Salvation in Jesus, the result is an Eternal separation from God. Self-righteousness and good works don't earn you Eternal life. On that Day, your sins and deeds will be exposed before all. And Jesus will say, I know you not and send you into everlasting punishment. That soul will be cut off from God for an eternity in hell. As Jesus warned us, hell is a place of eternal torment, weeping and gnashing of teeth, fire and thirst. It is appointed for a man once to die and then the Judgement. So my brother, my sister, repent and be saved and reconcile with God today. Jesus loves you and died for your sins. That much he loves and cares for you. He took the pain of death and hell upon himself on the Cross, so that you can be forgiven and be set free. Salvation is a free gift in Christ, you cannot earn it.

Believers will be judged too, but differently. Our sins are forgiven, so on that day, Jesus will judge our service, what we have done for His names' sake and reward us suitably. Nevertheless, it is still a dreadful day for a believer too. Our life's true measure will be exposed before all. I live in fear of that day and try and obey God and His Word continually, and also confess my sins promptly.

Here are a few things that will happen on that day.

a) God will show you what you could have been, compared to what you are. Your egos will be punctured as the true measure of our lives will come out. The wasted moments, the works in the flesh, wanton disobedience, self-life etc. How Jesus gave you multiple chances to mend. All these will be presented in public. I tell you the truth, it is a really dreadful day for everyone. So let us mend now.

b) The reality of our love for Christ will come out. God doesn't go by results, but by obedience to His will. Your true devotion to Jesus, in spending time with him, reading the Bible everyday and obeying it etc, all these things will be seen that day. Whether you are close friends of Christ, or just friends, or casual acquaintences of Jesus, 'twill all be known that day. Let Christ be your first priority, not career or family. Be tender-hearted towards God and man, and be always open to correction.

c) God will judge us by his law, that is the Bible. The life of Christ is shown in there as a model for us. And if you know just 5% of the Bible, then woe unto you. For both Blessings, victory, solutions, and also correction are in there. The life of God (Grace of God) flows to us only through the Bible. It is the operating manual for your life, hence it is important to read it Cover to Cover.

Pastors, you be judged most severely on that day. Be very fearful of that day as you have to give an account of your flock (Heb 13:17, 1 Pet 5:2). These days preachers preach blessings and excessive grace with no correction or repentance. They also preach 10% of the Bible and get along with it, as if it is a job. This kind of preaching is weak food, it also gives a false picture of God and results in a very weak congregation. If you've never preached a series of sermons on the Day of Judgement etc, you better make amends quickly. Half the social problems are because of poor preaching and poor instruction at home. Parents, take your responsibility seriously and teach your kids at home. Teaching Biblical truths to your children is your primary responsibility. God will hold you accountable one day.

Lastly, on the Day of Judgement, God will also answer every one of your questions. Many of us have a lot of questions to ask God. On that day, Jesus will explain every action of his, and after that we will only have to put our heads down. The fault will not be on His side, but on ours. God is eternally Holy.

Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty.

I conclude in the words of Solomon, "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into Judgement, including every secret thing, whether good or evil." Eccl 12:13,14.

4.New heavens and new earth

After the Judgement comes Blessing. "New heavens and the new earth" refers to two things: One the Reign of Christ upon the earth and second the New worlds after the Day of Judgement, wherein Heaven and earth will be one. Bible scholars also call this the regeneration of the universe, restoration of all things etc. Many prophets have spoken of this, but let us briefly look at what the Bible has to say.

Isaiah spoke of judgements upon the whole earth in (Isaiah 2,3,4,24, 63) and then speaks of the New heavens and the new earth which the Messiah will create upon the earth.

For behold, I create New heavens and a new earth;

And the former shall not be remembered nor come into mind.

But be ye glad and rejoice forever in that which I create;

For behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, And her people a joy.

The voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying. "

They shall build houses and inhabit them,

and they shall plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them.

Man's lifespan will be 100 years in that time. Also under Christ Jesus, all creation will be at rest. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat straw like the ox,

they shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain says the Lord. (Isaiah 65:17-25).

Please read Isaiah 65, 66, and Isaiah 11 etc.

Let us turn to what John saw in Revelation 21.

"Now I saw a New heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.

And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new.

And he said unto me, write: for these words are true and faithful.

And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.

I will give unto him that is thirsty of the fountain of the water of life freely.

He that overcomes shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son."

Peter tells us in 2 Peter 3:10-14 that "the Day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt

with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.

Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons you ought to be in holy conduct and godliness. Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for New heavens and a new earth where dwells righteousness". Therefore, beloved, as you look forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless

"Forever you will be, the Lamb upon the Throne,

I'll gladly bow my knee and Worship you alone."

Beloved, one day we will all be together in Heaven and worshiping Jesus our Lord for ever. There will be no more sun or moor, but the Face of Jesus will light up Heaven and our homes forever. And even in Eternity, Jesus will still have his wounds in his hands, it is the crucified Jesus who is worthy of all our Worship. And every day in Heaven, we will still be receiving new mercies from Him. Trillions of years from now, we will still not have begun to fathom the depths of the saving grace, that Jesus wrought for us upon earth. It is a time of endless joy in the Presence of God and Christ our Lord.

To God be much Glory through Jesus our Saviour, world without end.

Amen and Amen.
