Ruth in Boaz's field - Painting by Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld

"Boaz to Ruth, “The Lord recompense your work, and a full reward be given you by the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to trust”" Ruth 2:11,12

"And they called his name Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David" Ruth 4:17

"When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever2 Sam 7:12,13.16

"When I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also" 2 Tim 1:5

We all know this love story in Bethlehem well. Boaz was a rich Bachelor, a successful businessman, into farming, a very godly guy. Ruth is a young Moabitess, a widow looking for a second chance in life. Ruth was a woman of faith and grace, a godly girl. One day Ruth goes out randomly to glean and lands up in Boaz’s farm, the rest is history. Looking back each of those events and small decisions, we can see the footprints of the Holy Spirit.

Fast forward a few generations and David turns up. Who knows even Jesse may have been tutored in faith by his grandparents? David so wholly followed the Lord, and believed in the Messiah and His salvation and was very faithful in his walk with God. So much so that God the Father told David, in your family line will my son Jesus come. And His throne shall be established for ever. Jesus was born to David’s great grandchildren and the rest is Eternal history. So much for a man who fully followed the Lord. So we turn to Boaz and Ruth and draw a few lessons for us. Some encouragement for the singles and lessons for families.

Ruth in the fields by Merle Hugues

Faith needs a home to dwell in: Boaz was a man of faith, and he was waiting for years to meet the right girl and God provided him one such. Only when both husband and wife are almost equal in faith and life purposes, then only something of value can be released into the world. Boaz and Ruth no doubt influenced generations in a profound way, hence when Solomon built the temple finally, he set up two pillars in the front, one was called Jachin, another Boaz, (Jachin was a priest in the Bible, not much is written about him). 2 Chronicles 3:17.

What is passed on from generation to generation is faith, not land, building or gold. Most families today work very hard to provide education, money, land, apartments, sometimes foreign education to their children, they miss the main point of it all totally, its faith that needs to be nurtured. If real faith doesn’t exist in your son or daughter, all the rest is a waste. That’s why Peter calls it that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold (1 Peter 1:7). I still remember my grandmother’s teachings, they impacted me more than any preacher even till today. That’s what I admire about Ruth and Billy Graham, Uncle D.G.S.Dhinakaran and Aunty, J.S.Bach and Anna Magdalena etc. They gave their faith to the next generation, so that the lamp continued for generations.

Wherever there is pure faith and its nurtured, Christ is birthed/manifested again and again. Paul speaking to Timothy, refers to the faith of his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois. What a soil of faith in Christ Jesus. Whenever you see such faith being nurtured across generations, it always produces deep results. Timothy planted many churches as we know. The line of Bachs is amazing, and subsequent musicians of all generations developed on the base of Bach - Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin etc. There’s no pianist on earth who hasn’t played Bach, especially his Preludes and Fugues. Even the musical line of David with his Psalms and Church songs impacted eternity. We still read them daily.

I close with the lines of G Campbell Morgan "Boaz the Hebrew and Ruth the Moabitess in union became the highway for God toward the ultimate realization of His purposes"

Make wise choices, as you select your life-partners and as you build your families. if you slip up in these decisions, it may take decades to correct and some don’t at all. It then becomes a waste of a lifetime. Nurture your sons and daughter in faith and guide them - they are your eternal treasure and reward.
